The European Union sees all possibilities for Bangladesh to move to the GSP+ scheme from the Everything but Arms (EBA) scheme, in regards to exporting Bangladeshi products to the EU.
In a reception marking the 51st Independence Day organized by the Bangladesh embassy in Belgium, Gunner Wiegnand, managing director for the Asia and the Pacific region of EEAS, expressed such views.
He expressed that Bangladesh has been a steadfast exporting partner for the EU. He also mentioned that the EU noticed all the hard work being done in Bangladesh to diversify export, increase green investment, and digital transition to develop the country.
Bangladesh currently enjoys a duty-free facility under the EBA scheme of the European Union market, but it is set to expire in 2026 when Bangladesh graduates from LDC status. He also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, health and pharmaceuticals, climate change and many other potential areas of mutual interest in the coming years.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Mission to EU, Mahbub Hassan Saleh highlighted Bangladesh’s five decades-long partnership between Bangladesh and the EU.
He added that the Everything but Arms (EBA) trade privilege played an extremely important role in continually accelerating Bangladesh’s development.
